West Nile Case in West Alabama Prompts Reminder

VERNON, AL. (WCBI) — A case of West Nile virus in a horse in West Alabama has medical professionals reminding residents the West Nile season is not over.

The West Nile case was confirmed Friday after a horse died in Lamar County, Ala. Horses can be vaccinated against West Nile and encephalitis to help avoid the spread of the diseases to other animals and humans through mosquitoes.

Experts say cool weather does not mean the virus isn’t still being transmitted. And simple steps now can prevent further spread, especially if another warm winter increases risks next year.

“So what we’re trying to say is for people not to panic with their horses or themselves but to do what’s available to take care of the situation,” said Dr. Paul Click, a Vernon, Ala., veterinarian.

This year already has been seen a record number of West Nile cases in Mississippi, including one human case diagnosed in Lowndes County last week.
