2% restaurant tax back in talks

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Lowndes County and the city of Columbus are one step closer to potentially collecting a two percent restaurant tax again.

Columbus-Lowndes Convention Visitors Bureau CEO, Nancy Carpenter, said the bill has been pre-filed and is now waiting to be discussed and voted on in Jackson.

A measure to renew the tax died in committee during last year’s session.

If the bill passes the legislature and is signed by governor Phil Bryant, Carpenter says it could go into effect this year.

“We are excited to get a new start, to have a new beginning and we will do with what we’re given and we will make that work, and we will do what is best for our community,” said Carpenter.

At Monday’s meeting, the CVB unanimously agreed on an inter-local agreement reached with the City of Columbus and Lowndes County.
