TPD Responds To Shooting

TUPELO, MS (WCBI)  Tupelo Police have released the following statement on Saturday night officer involved shooting

A Tupelo Police officer and K-9 unit are recovering from injuries, and a suspect has died from wounds suffered after a routine traffic stop turned violent. About 10 p.m. Saturday, the police officer and K9 unit made a routine traffic stop in the Lee Acres neighborhood. The suspect fled the car and a foot chase ensued to the 900 block of Harrison Street. A search for the suspect led officers to the suspect’s hiding place under a house. The suspect emerged from hiding and attacked the K9 unit and officer. During the struggle, the suspect was shot. The suspect was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center, where he subsequently died, according to Coroner Carolyn Green. The officer and the K9 unit suffered injuries. They were treated, doing well and are currently recovering. The incident has been turned over to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, said Deputy Chief Allan Gilbert.
