Video: 600 Students Receive School Supplies

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — Hundreds of students will soon be starting the school year with new backpacks.

Lines spilled outside of American Legion in Columbus, Friday, for a bookbag giveaway and health fair.

Contact Helpline is using the event to share its crisis hotline number (328-0200) with those who may be depressed or suicidal.

Organizers say they’re happy to reach out to folks.

“We’ve had a great response,” said Katrina Sunivelle, Contact Helpline. “We went into the community and had pre-registration with 300 students, and we are going toward our 600 today, which means individuals here will receive more school supplies at each table.”

Several other organizations participated, including Community Counseling, the Red Cross, and United Way.
