Gurley pulls out on top in Monroe County Coroner race

MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-The race for Monroe County Coroner was decided with the Tuesday vote.

Alan Gurley defeated challenger Charles Smith for an eighth term as Monroe County Coroner. Gurley came away with 86% of the vote, while Smith garnered 14%.

Gurley said many challenges face coroners across the state, but he looks forward to continue serving the citizens of Monroe County.

“Things have changed so much over the last few years, with medical examiner’s office and crime lab not being able to keep adequate staff in there. We are currently waiting about eight weeks now, waiting on toxicology tests to come back so I can tell families what their loved one died from,” said Gurley.

Gurley ran as a Democrat. He had no challenger on the Republican side.
