Early morning fire destroys Columbus church

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- A Columbus church burned down early Monday morning.

Columbus Fire and Rescue was called out to a blaze at First Independent Methodist Church out on 417 North Lehmburg Road.

The fire completely engulfed and destroyed the building.

Officials said it took about 3 hours to put out the flames.

Columbus Fire Marshal Alan Lewis told WCBI the church has been ruled a total loss.

A preliminary investigation will be conducted by State Fire Marshals.

Lewis said it may be a few days before the marshals can come out.
