Columbus, Miss. (WCBI) — David Duett will be the first person to tell you he’s made some mistakes in his life.

“I got addicted to methamphetamines…”, says the 51 year old Duett, “…and it took me down a path to self destruction. Left me to losing my job, didn’t care about nothing, staying up 6, 7 days at a time, no sleep, and eventually it sent me to prison.

Duett says being in prison took him away from the things he loved the most, like his aging mother and his 12 year old daughter, Brooke Ann.

Now 18 years old, she says her relationship with her father today couldn’t be any stronger.

“He’s my best friend”, says Brooke Ann, “…and I think the thing I’ve seen the most in him is how much he helps me in my spiritual life and how he helps other people.”

David constantly thanked the community for all of their support. Duett still remains strongly devoted to his spiritual beliefs as they are what he believes helped him redeem himself.

“I still get down on my knees every morning and ask God get me through the day”, Duett says, “…even though I’ve been clean and sober now almost 7 years, you know, I have to ask him for help every morning and at night I thank him for it.”

Brooke Ann believes she has learned from her father’s experiences and knows importance of being there for family and support when fighting the addiction disease.

“I think it’s shown me the most that even when you hit rock bottom, with support, you can overcome everything”, says Brooke Ann “…and I think for anybody who’s fighting addiction or if you know somebody fighting addiction, support is the biggest thing because everybody makes mistakes but if you support them they can get through it.”

Brooke Ann, a recent high school graduate, also says her father’s redemption has inspired her to pursue a career in counseling, more specifically addiction counseling.

Along with reffing local sports, David Duett also does motivational speaking and visits churches around the area.
