Absentee voting underway for two Starkville elections

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Absentee voting is underway for two Starkville elections.

Thursday, May 30, people who live in the city will vote on a 1% hotel and restaurant tax.

The tax, if approved, will fund a premium sports complex.

Plans include tournament quality fields for softball and baseball, new playing fields for soccer, and improvements to city parks.

Supporters of the increase estimate adding that extra 1% will bring in around $1 million dollars a year.

The measure must be approved by 60 percent of the people who vote on May 30.

At the same time, residents in Starkville’s Ward 5 will vote on a new alderman during the special election.
