Active shooter drill practiced in Aberdeen

ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) – They’ve become all too common across the United States.

Mass shootings.

One sheriff’s office is making sure those in their community are prepared by hosting active shooter seminars informing folks how to respond in the event of an active shooter.

Thursday morning, at the American Legion Post 26 in Aberdeen, Master Sergeant Tim Oswalt talked about ways for people to protect themselves if they were ever to be in a worst-case scenario.

The seminar was sponsored by the Monroe County Chamber of Commerce.

This comes after several community members requested it in light of recent tragedies in Texas, California, and even our own backyard in Southaven.

Master Sergeant Oswalt said in an active shooter situation, do what you can to get away.

“First thing, if you hear gunfire you want to avoid it at all cost as a civilian. Then, you want to barricade yourself into a room; and we’ve got different tactics we’re going to teach about that to deny them access to your location, and if they do breach that access then the last thing you need to do is defend yourself. You to you have every right to protect yourself. You fight for your life at that point,” said Master Sgt. Oswalt.

Another seminar is being held Thursday night at Amory High School’s auditorium at 6:30 pm.
