Additional restaurant tax legislation moves through state Senate

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Legislation going through the state Senate could bring you a higher dinner bill.

Two virtually identical bills were introduced Wednesday that would add a one percent tax on restaurant sales in the city of Columbus.

The legislation would impact restaurants with gross sales of more than $100,000.

It would also require a city-wide election before the measure could go forward.

Money from the tax would specifically go to infrastructure improvements, including roads, curbs, gutters and sidewalks.

The cash collected would also be used for the operation and maintenance of the Senator Terry Brown Amphitheater.

This would be in addition to the two percent tax legislation that has already been signed by the governor.
