Additional Storm Death, Damage Reported to Mema

PEARL, Miss. (Press Release) — The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency has confirmed the death of a child that had been missing in Winston County, raising the total to 14 in the state as a result of tornadoes and severe weather on Monday. Damage is being reported in 23 counties with at least 1,201 homes destroyed or sustained major damage with a total of more than 2,459 homes affected. In addition preliminary assessments show 87 businesses destroyed or sustained major damage.

The counties reporting storm-related deaths are as follows:

  • Issaquena: One death.
  • Leake: One death.
  • Lee: One death.
  • Rankin: One death.
  • Winston: 10 deaths.

A Federal Disaster Declaration Request has been granted for Itawamba, Lee, Lowndes, Madison, Rankin, Wayne and Winston counties. Additional areas may be requested after damage assessments are completed. Individuals and businesses owners in the declared counties are encouraged to register for assistance with FEMA by going online to www.disasterassistance.gov or calling 1-800-621-3362.
