Alabama House Speaker Removed from Office

OPELIKA, Ala. (AP) — Alabama Republican Mike Hubbard’s political future once seemed limitless, but it ended with 12 guilty verdicts.

The 54-year-old speaker of the Alabama House was removed from office Friday after being convicted of felony ethics violations. Hubbard was convicted of soliciting work and investments and using his office to benefit his business clients.

Hubbard’s conviction and his automatic removal from office end a storied and controversial career and add to ongoing political turmoil involving GOP leaders in all three branches of Alabama government.

Gov. Robert Bentley faces a sex-tinged scandal involving a former aide. Chief Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore is suspended from office and faces possible ouster over accusations that he violated judicial ethics during the fight about same-sex marriage.
