VERNON, Alabama. (WCBI)- You can never be too prepared for mother nature’s wrath.

This weekend the state of Alabama is holding its fifth annual Severe Weather Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday.

Customers can stock up on essential supplies to help prepare for them for severe weather.

We’re only two months into the new year and West Alabama has already witnessed first hand what kind of damage a severe storm can cause.

Now, with Storm season is right around the corner, shoppers were out in full force today to capitalize on this Sale.

“Yeah Vernon, we’ve had a history of bad weather and I think something like this would really help,” said Mike Covington, owner of Lamar Luber & Supply.

This sale allows customers to purchase items such as batteries, ductape, tarps and other common supplies tax free.

“It’s a great thing, it actually gives costumer a chance to save money an to get ready for the storm season that’s coming this spring,” said pharmacist Sam Durham.

Although the tax free weekend is great for customers, it’s also great for local business as well.

“The volume of people coming in and you know, just more people buying things, certainly good for my business,” said Covington.

“Business is great,” said Durham.

Durham is a pharmacist at Durham’s Pharmacy, and this year is the store’s first year participating in the sale.

“It drives in traffic into the store, and it’s always a good thing whenever customers can come here and purchase items, we’re really grateful,” said Durham.

And so far, Durham said there has been one key item in particular that’s been a hot buy.

“For us, it’s the weather radios,” said Durham. “It’s just important for people to have these in their homes. It’s something that doesn’t cost very much money and for a small amount of effort on the consumer part, they can be protected and be notified when a tornado or other sever weather comes.”

Items less than 60 dollars can be purchased tax free. Generators costing one thousand dollars or less can also be purchased tax free.

The sale started today and will last throughout the weekend.
