ALICEVILLE, Ala. (WCBI) — A cotton mill in Aliceville went up in flames Saturday afternoon.

Witnesses say it happened around noon.

The Aliceville Fire Department contained the blaze but hours later the building was still smoldering.

Some say the flames and smoke shot into the sky like nothing they’ve seen before.

“I came down into the Cotton Mill Village and the whole abandoned building was ablaze. It was like an inferno. I’d like to take my hat off to Aliceville Fire Department,” says Eric H. Bonner, who saw the flames.

The cotton mill has been closed for several years.

I am truly saddened by the news of the Mill burning. My grandfather Lige Burns was one of the first supervisor of the cotton mill, all my relatives worked there including my mother who passed away last year at the age of 94. It is a shame that the building could not have been a memorial or museum of some kind. There is certainly a lot of history behind it. I hope the people responsible are found and held accountable.
