Area Agencies Reap Reward Of Run

TUPELO, Miss. – Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds from the 2015 Komen North Mississippi Race for the Cure, $150,000, will provide medically under-served women in this region much needed access to health care and breast cancer treatment, while the remaining 25 percent will be used by Susan G. Komen for the Cure to fund national breast cancer research.

The grants were awarded at a reception held April 5 at the North Mississippi Medical Center Women’s Hospital.

“Area not-for-profit organizations were asked to submit proposals that meet the funding priorities identified in the affiliate’s 2015 Community Profile,” said Cindy Hale, executive director for the Komen North Mississippi Affiliate. “We were particularly interested in programs that would provide screenings for the medically under-served in the 16-county service area.”

The grant committee awarded $150,000 in grants to area not-for-profit organizations and funded the following requests:

  • Baptist Memorial Healthcare Foundation was awarded $47,000 to provide mammograms at the four Baptist hospitals in north Mississippi (Union County, Booneville, Columbus and Oxford).

  • North Mississippi Medical Center Breast Care Center received $25,000 to provide mammograms for medically under-served women throughout the Komen North Mississippi service area.

  • Sisters Network was the recipient of a $23,000 grant to provide mammograms for the medically under-served and education for African-American women in the Komen North Mississippi service area.

  • Antone Tannehill Good Samaritan Free Clinic was awarded $17,000 to provide screening mammograms for indigent women in Lee County.

  • The Good Samaritan Medical Clinic was the recipient of a $5,500 grant to provide working uninsured women in Lowndes County access to screening mammograms.

  • Magnolia Regional Health Center Foundation in Corinth received $5,800 for a breast cancer educational program.

  • Access Family Health Services was awarded $17,450 for screening and education.

  • Lift Inc., was awarded $1,000 for mammogram assistance.

Komen North Mississippi Race for the Cure® serves a 16-county area, which includes Alcorn, Calhoun, Chickasaw, Clay, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Lowndes, Monroe, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Oktibbeha, Tishomingo, Tippah and Union counties.

Since the north Mississippi Race began in 1998, the affiliate has granted $2.1 million locally and more than $680,000 for research.

Susan G. Komen is the largest non-government funder of breast cancer research in the world and currently manages 124 active research grants totaling more than $36 million, bringing Komen’s total research investment since inception to over $889 million- more than any other nonprofit. A broad range of research is supported, from basic biology and prevention to treatment for aggressive and metastatic disease.
