Area students donate over 2,000 canned goods to local shelter

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – Students from East Mississippi Community College rallied together and broke their record today.

Every year, the different college branches come together to donate canned food to Sally Kate Winters Family Services in West Point.

The food helps stock the shelter’s pantry throughout the year.

This year students donated over 2,000 canned goods.

Organizers said it’s the biggest donation they’ve ever received.

“Absolutely, by far, the biggest. This is going to be hard to top next year. We’re going to try! Every year we try to do better than the year before. So, we’ll see, but we’re very proud,” said EMCC Instructor Trina Dendy.

“So, really building a good citizen is community involvement. The younger that we can get volunteers involved with our program, the better we are developing community citizens to help make our communities safer and better places to live,” said SKWFS Executive Director Sheila Brand.

Last year, the shelter helped 115 children.
