MONROE COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – People breaking into jail.
It’s not a problem that you hear about every day, but it’s been happening for years at the old Athens Jail in Monroe County.
The 168 year old facility is the county’s oldest public building.
Its stark charm has inspired numerous paintings and photographs, but vandals have taken their toll.
Concerned local folks worked hard to preserve the jail, but criminals still smashed its windows, stole its bricks and kicked in its doors.
In an effort to prevent further damage, the windows and doors of the Athens Jail have been boarded up.
