Back To School Haircuts

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- Some Columbus students will start the school year a cut above the rest.

One local hair salon, Fanta K, held its first annual back to school giveaway, but this giveaway had a little twist to it.

Back to school giveaways usually include free pencils, paper, and even school uniforms, but what about free hair cuts?

“We’re trying to send them back to school one a more fresh start, nice fresh style, and let them know that we don’t have to be your parents to be here for you, we’re still here for you because we want to see you’re kids grow,” said barber Darius Halbert.

Halbert will spent the majority of his Sunday cutting more than a dozen heads.

“He’s  gonna keep it dark at the top,” said Halbert.  “I’m gonna round it off, then i’m gonna fade the top, and just and fade it off a little bit on the sides.”

Because he knows the importance of sending kids back to school with a nice hair cut.

“Well it’s important to give back to the kids because a lot of kids aren’t fortunate enough to get what a lot of kids can, and their parents are struggling , so we’re showing them we don’t mind sticking up for the kids because the kids are out future,” said Halbert.

“I’m not spending any money I’m just spending my time,” said Makani Diabagte, beautician at Fanta K African Hair Braiding.

Diabagte came up with the idea to add this unique twist to her back to school giveaway.

“I know you have kids who parents may not have the money to get their hair braided because it cost so much,” she said.

So she wanted to help parents keep a few extra dollars in their pockets. Diagate said the free haircuts may be a small gesture, but it definitely goes a long way.

“If I can make one kid happy to go to school with their hair freshly done professionally, I’m gonna do that,” she said.

And she’s hoping the free haircuts will give kids will have all of the kids returning to school with a smiles on their faces.

“Anybody will want a hair due period. But when you don’t have to stress your mom to get it and you can get it for free and look good to start your school year, yea i’m sure they’re gonna be happy,” said Diabagte.

This was the salon’s first time hosting the giveaway, they plan to make it an annual event.
