BALDWYN – Two candidates qualified to run for mayor of Baldwyn last week just before Friday deadline, making it a three-person race.

Roslynn Clark Copeland, 49, decided to run because she said wants to have a positive impact in the city.

“I think I can be an asset and the empower my community with what I’ve learned,” said the 22 year Army Nurse Corps veteran. “I’ve traveled and lived in many cities and states. I have experience with teamwork and leadership and we know with a good team you can move mountains.”

Jim Grisham, 47, said he wants to change the way people think about the small town.

“I just want to bring some excitement to the Baldwyn area,” Grisham said. “I want to change the perception outside communities have and attract businesses to help our town grow.”

Alma S. Welch previously qualified for the post but withdrew her name from the ballot before the qualification deadline Friday.

Incumbent Mayor Michael James will face the two new candidates in the May 7 Democratic Primary.

SALTILLO

A fourth candidate qualified to run for mayor in Saltillo. The relatively new Saltillo resident qualified as a Democrat and will run against current Saltillo Police Chief Steve Brooks in the May 7 primary.

Daniel Jennings, 38, has lived in the city less than a year and wants to give public service a try.

“I’ve never run for anything before and wanted to give it a shot, throw my name out there,” he said. “There is always room for change.”

In the Republican Primary, Rex Smith and Paul Turner will opposed each other. The winners of the primaries will face off in the June 4 general election.
