Baldwyn Fire Victims Make Much Progress, Thanks To Community Support

BOONEVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Just five days after a fire that completely destroyed 8 units at a Baldwyn apartment complex, families have made much progress towards a new way of life, thanks to the Red Cross and community sponsors.

Tuesday night, a devastating fire broke out at the Garden View Apartment Complex in Baldwyn. All units were destroyed, causing families to lose their homes and belongings.

The American Red Cross has organized recovery efforts and held a meeting at the College Inn in Booneville to help the families. All families but one have found housing and received a variety of donations from the community.

Red Cross caseworkers say the recovery has been remarkable.

“It’s a challenging situation, anytime there’s a fire, and when there’s a fire in your whole apartment complex, that’s your community. What I have seen here is people pulling together, looking out for each other, you know, one person goes to the Salvation Army and learns they can get furniture there and they share that with each other, that’s been hugely helpful,” said North Mississippi Red Cross Program Manager, Nicholas Garbacz.

For information on how you can donate, call 1-800-RED CROSS, or text the words REDCROSS to 90999 to make a $10 donation.
