JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) — Some state lawmakers are looking at ways to help inmates further their education.

Rep. William Tracy Arnold (R-Dist. 3), who represents Alcorn and Prentiss Counties, has introduced a bill authorizing community colleges to offer online courses for state inmates.

EMCC President Tom Huebner tells WCBI he thinks it’s a good idea.

“We are absolutely interested in helping to serve the communities in providing educational opportunities wherever that is needed, so we will see where that bill goes, but the idea is something we are well equipped to do,” Huebner said.

Right now House Bill 43 is still in committee.

If passed by lawmakers and the governor, the bill will go into effect July 1.
