Starkville, Miss. (WCBI) — The Starkville Board of Alderman passed a request Tuesday night to ask state legislators for $2.4 million to fund renovations to the Starkville Police Department building.

Starkville Vice Mayor Roy A. Perkins says architects estimate the project’s total cost to be $5.4 million, and the Board of Alderman already approved $3 million to go towards the project.

The 26,000 square foot renovation would include a complete historical restoration, along with an entire roof replacing, securing parking with walls, and also a room for evidence storage.

Mayor Parker Wiseman said the funding would come July 1st, and he says even if the funding does not come, he is “optimistic” the project will break ground this summer.

Wiseman also said he is pleased with the “worthwhile request”, and he hopes the legislature will help restore one of the city’s most historical buildings. While nothing is set in stone, Wiseman said the police department will vacate the building and is reviewing options as to where the department will be.
