Boykin Civil Suit Answers Barred From Criminal Case

ABERDEEN (WCBI) – A federal judge says depositions by  former Columbus Police officer Canyon Boykin in a civil suit cannot be used by criminal prosecutors.

Judge David Sanders says Boykin can go ahead and give a deposition in the civil suit and warned attorneys for both sides his answers are not to be shown or provided to anyone connected to his criminal case.  The court order also says any civil motions citing the deposition must be filed under seal.    Sanders says allowing Boykin’s civil suit responses to be used by prosecutors would violate his fifth amendment rights of self incrimination.   Boykin was indicted for culpable negligence manslaughter in the October 2015 shooting death of Ricky Ball.
