COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A new $1.3 million gun training range for Columbus Air Force Base should be ready for use by April or May.

The county has approved spending about $18,000 remaining in the budget for a warning and public address system, signs and barricades between shooting platforms.

Some drainage and fencing work remains to complete the facility being built on land off Yorkville Road owned by Columbus and Lowndes County.

The two local governments match a state grant to built the 18-lane range that base officials said two years ago would be important to protecting it from future rounds of base closures.
