Canine virus distemper resurfaces in Starkville

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – Starville Police Department is warning of a canine virus that has resurfaced in Starkville.

Animal control has recently picked up three raccoons within city limits with two of them confirmed to have the virus, while the third showed symptoms.

The department said on its Facebook page that so far, no reports of pets having the disease have come in but, that could change if pets aren’t vaccinated.

The disease is considered highly contagious and is spread through direct contact, sneezing or coughing. It can be found in skunks, foxes, dogs, raccoons, ferrets, and wolves.

Pet owners are urged to prevent their pets from having contact with wildlife or any animal not vaccinated.
