The Mississippi Highway Patrol is still investigating an early morning, two-vehicle crash in Alcorn County. Troopers responded to US 72, near Strickland Bridge, at approximately 4:00am.
Upon arriving it appeared Zachary Crum, 28, of Iuka, was traveling west bound, in a 2003 GMC Sierra, when he apparently rear-ended a west bound, 2006 Mazda Tribute, driven by Eva Austin, 72, of Rienzi. After the impact, Austin lost control of her vehicle, ran off the road and overturned several times.
Austin and a passenger, Alice Thrasher, 74, of Corinth, were both taken to Magnolia Regional Medical Center in Corinth and later transferred to North Mississippi Medical Center with life threatening injuries. They both had to be extricated from their vehicle.
Crum was uninjured in the crash.
Troopers collected physical evidence at the crash scene that would indicate Crum may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Criminal charges against Crum are pending the investigation.
