Check Scam Rebounds In Golden Triangle

COLUMBUS (WCBI) – An old scam is getting new life in the Golden Triangle.

MONEY

16th Judicial District Attorney Investigator Woody Woodruff says the DA’s office is looking into a case where a local resident was approached about a check cashing scam.  Investigator Woodruff was notified this week of a citizen who was contacted by a subject outside of the area, via the internet who eventually mailed her a check for a large sum of money and asked the young lady to cash the check and keep a small amount of the money and wire the remaining larger sum back to them.

Woodruff says the biggest problem is many times the victims, who are often elderly or very young don’t alert authorities about the scams and they continue to spread.  Merchants are also being asked to watch out for suspicious checks being cashed.
