Clay County lieutenant honored for helping a fellow officer

CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – A Clay County lieutenant received recognition for going above and beyond for a fellow officer.

Lt. Casandra Smith received the Sheepdog Society award from Monee, Illinois Officer Michael Drumm.

In 2018, Drumm and his family were traveling through West Point when the family had an emergency. Drumm and his family made a stop at NMMC West Point, where they found out a family member with a heart condition needed to be flown to NMMC Tupelo.

Drum and his family were stuck in traffic trying to drive to Tupelo, when Lt. Smith, not knowing Drumm was a fellow officer, escorted the family to Tupelo.

While being escorted, Drumm’s car got a flat tire. Lt. Smith continued to help the family by taking the flat tire to be fixed and then bringing it back to the family.

Months after helping Drumm, Lt. Smith received The Sheepdog Society award and patches from Officer Drumm in the mail.

The Sheepdog Society Awards is given to officers through a program called “Cops Training Cops” to recognize officers who go above and beyond their normal duties.
