Columbus Annual Thanksgiving Community Dinner

COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI) – 10th avenue Church Of Christ held it’s annual Thanksgiving community dinner. Inside the church was a little love and a little service.

“I felt like this was a good project that they had going on…and I wanted to be apart of it,” said volunteer Mrs. Smith.

“What we are trying to do here is do a better job, with connecting to the community and letting people know who we are, and trying to serve them,” said Minister Willie McCord.

Notice every member has gloves and an apron.

“It takes a lot of people first of all and a lot of volunteers. There were hours upon hours, and it takes about three to four weeks to get this organized and get it prepared,” said McCord.

Not to mention welcoming arms.

“I’ve been serving and helping people get through the line and getting people what the want to eat,” said Smith.

The people in need come in and fill out a guest card and wa-la! a plate in a bag ready, filled with all the fixings.

Church members say as soon as you fix your plate, watch it! Because with food this good, someone is bound to take it.

“I recommend sampling it all. It’s just that good,” said Smith.

Speaking of dressing or in this case, dress, a storage unit full of clothes is nearby for people who need a little more than a meal.

Barbara Shanklin and Makayla Jefferson say they learned a valuable lesson while giving their time.

“You never know until you come out and do it because you may think well that person doesn’t need this or that person doesn’t need that,” said church member Shanklin.

“I’m here to help others who don’t have anything to eat or nowhere to get their clothes from,” said member Jefferson.

Over one hundred people were fed during this annual event.
