Columbus police are investigating a deadly shooting at a northside home

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus police are investigating a deadly shooting at a northside home.

Officers were called to the 2200 block of 15th Avenue North just after 8 this morning.

Police Chief Fred Shelton says a friend went to check on the victim and found him dead.

Investigators recovered shell casings in the street and could see signs of a break-in to the home.

No arrest has been made.

Lowndes County Coroner Greg Merchant is still notifying family members of the victim.

An autopsy will be done at the state crime lab.

“This is an elderly citizen of the community that people know and love, and again when there is a connection to the community. The community needs to connect with the police department and we all connect together. That means that the community has lost a person,” said Columbus Police Chief Fred Shelton. “So, it is very important that if they have information call Crime stoppers or 911 and get that information to us.”

It could be tomorrow before the victim’s name is released.
