STURGIS, Miss. (WCBI) — Some North Mississippi educators are using a fun and friendly competition to make students better readers.

West Elementary School held a sight word championship Wednesday for its kindergarten through second graders.

Teachers say this competition is a way to help the kids build their sight word fluency.

“The children really gain fluency, and that overall helps their reading comprehension that a lot of students struggle with, so our goal is to increase their reading fluency by building sight word fluency,” said Melanie Cade, school interventionist.

West Elementary started the championship two years ago, and holds it at least twice a year.

Winners receive certificates.
