COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Construction is moving forward on what will be an amphitheater near the Columbus Riverwalk.

Workers are pouring concrete this week on the Island and phase one of the project is about a third of the way done. A city spokesman says they expect everything to be completed late next spring or early next summer for the entertainment venue.

Everything is on schedule and on budget, according to the city. The amphitheater will cost about $3 million. It will cover about three acres and seat around 2,000 people.

Columbus leaders are still looking for more money. Leaders expect to ask the state for assistance.

It’s expected to be called the Sen. Terry Brown Amphitheater. Workers broke ground in December of last year. The initial completion date was this December.

A city spokesman said the dry conditions are helping construction move quickly.
