Controversy in West Point after dog shot by animal control officer

WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI)- Controversy Monday night in West Point after a dog was shot by the animal control officer.

WCBI spoke with the animal control officer on the phone who said he did shoot the dog Monday morning in the Highland Park Subdivision.

That subdivision is near the high school. Many folks took to Facebook saying the animal control officer’s actions were unnecessary.

The dog was a pit bull mix breed. Just last week, the officer said the dog was aggressive and chased a kid onto the high school campus and knocked over a pregnant woman.

According to city ordinance dogs are not allowed to run at large and that breed is illegal to have in the city limits of West Point.

Police Chief Avery Cook said he hasn’t received any complaint from the dog’s owner.
