COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)—Unifying the community; is the message from the Columbus Police Department.

Columbus District Attorney, Scott Colom, The City Council and local company, J-5 held the first Cops for Kids event Saturday.

Residents across the city came out to enjoy food, fun and music.

The event is designed to bridge the gap between law enforcement and the areas they serve.

“Were building a bridge to a better future and what ‘we’re hoping is that others will pick up on this and decide to be apart of the solution and so we will permeate outside the boundaries of the city of Columbus and and the other cities around the state and other states and around the country.” said J-5  CEO, Jabari Edwards.

The organizers says they hope to make it an annual event.
