City council rescinds vote to cancel healthcare contract for city workers

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus councilmen take a step-back on doing away with free medical clinic visits for city employees.

In Tuesday’s budget meeting, city leaders rescinded their vote to cancel the contract with Baptist Golden Triangle.

Instead, they moved to have more talks with the healthcare provider to lower the cost.

Right now, the city pays $192,000 a year for its 254 employees.

As the city crafted the upcoming budget, some believed not enough workers were using the free service.

A city spokesman says Baptist will meet with the city’s insurance committee.

Similar meetings are reportedly scheduled with Lowndes County and Columbus Light and Water, which also provide free medical clinic visits to employees.
