Demolition Stopped On Lowndes County Owned Building

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Demolition is halted on a downtown Columbus building owned by Lowndes County.

County Administrator Ralph Billingsley says the county did not consult with the Columbus Historic Preservation Commission before starting work to take down the old Waters building at the intersection of 6th Street and 2nd Avenue North.

The building itself is not historical but is in the historic district. The commission would have to approve the work.

Billingsley says the county will get with the commission as soon as possible.

There’s no word on when work will resume.

Plans are to make the area a parking lot.
