Disaster Preparedness Drill held on MUW campus

LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) – Emergency responders in Lowndes County and at MUW trained for a fire disaster on campus.

The university along with law enforcement, Columbus Air Force Base, Baptist Golden Triangle, the Red Cross, and other entities participated in the Disaster Preparedness Drill Friday morning.

The scenario of the full-scale drill was a dorm fire.

Organizers said it will help enhance MUW’s preparedness and test how well emergency workers respond. The drill also tested the W’s notifications system and communications.

“Inter-operability for us, for first responders, and everything like that, and the students were able to see how we work. How it’s going to happen in real life, and what they can expect because most of them are nursing students and then they can see what’s going to happen in real life,” said Chris Carter, of Columbus Fire Department.

Carter said they will have another disaster training exercise next year.
