Downtown piano turns heads and ears in Starkville

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) – If you were in downtown Starkville Tuesday, you may have heard some sweet sounds coming down the sidewalk.

The city has installed a street piano on Main Street just outside the 929 Coffee House.

Mayor Lynn Spruill said she got the idea of implementing the street piano from a video she saw on social media.

A resident donated the piano, and it was set up earlier Tuesday morning.

Dozens have taken a turn to tickle the ivories.

Spruill says the piano is available to anyone who has a desire to play it.

“I think it adds another dimension and makes it one of those things where people want to sit down and they hang around to listen and to enjoy the music. Music makes you want to stay,” Spruill continued. “That’s a lot of the reasons people go to concerts and shows and that sort of thing, so I think it might have that opportunity for us to create a place where people feel comfortable hanging around downtown and enjoying it.”

The city is now looking to get it painted.

Even though Tuesday was the first for the piano, Spruill says it’s already becoming popular in downtown Starkville.
