Faith, football and fun: local church holds football Sunday service

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) – It may be the last place you would have expected to get hyped up for the Super Bowl.

A Tupelo church found a way to use the biggest game of the year to bring souls to salvation.

Mixing faith, football, and fun.

Cornerstone Baptist Church in Tupelo scored a win with parishioners with its special celebration of the Super Bowl.

“Today is football Sunday, as we all know. And this is a place where we can connect our fun and faith together for the big game,” said pastor Michael Watkins.

The atmosphere in the sanctuary was just as exciting and electric as Hard Rock Stadium in Miami.

It’s an annual event members look forward to.

“So we have football Sunday every year and we packed this place out with some incredible time of worship the word and incredible video testimonies from NFL players,” explained Watson.

Members and guests were decked out in their favorite team’s gear, ready to cheer, praise, and have a good time.

“Absolutely, we’re promoting it on social media, we’re telling them weeks in advance, hey, come where your favorite stuff, we even give out prizes to the kids that were the best dressed and so we’re excited. We love doing it. It’s awesome.” said Watson.

The church even had something special planned to give the crowd a boost of energy.

“We have cheerleaders come in, it’s just so high energy new habit drumline come in,” said Bre Welch, a staff member at Cornerstone Baptist Church.

This was the fourth year the church held its football Sunday service.
