Families in need a receiving some Christmas help

STARKVILLE, Miss. (WCBI)- While the holiday season is meant to be filled with joy and laughter, it sometimes can be stressful financially.

Some families worry about how Santa will fulfill their kids Christmas wish list.

Christmas is a season of giving, and there are many groups working to make sure no families are left out.

With the big day only a week away they are preparing for their deliveries.

“We are looking pretty good we have about 55 families that we are set up to help so, for the most part, all of their gifts, and presents have been returned in the next couple days we will do giveaways,” said Katie Walker.

Thanks to supporters every angel gets a gift this holiday season.

“We have other groups that maybe they don’t want to necessarily adopt a family, but they want to provide new packs of socks and underwear and gloves, or they want to do just a toy drive so. Then we also have some community members that say if you have anybody that doesn’t get adopted or they missed getting to adopt, so we were able to fill in and supplement for them,” said Walker.

And the Salvation Army isn’t the only helping out local families in need.

The Starkville Poverty Coalition held a Christmas Co-op last week.

“We got 1,200 presents donated and then a lot of cash donations as well we were overwhelmed by the generosity of the start for community and also the openness to a new project that’s a little more developmental in nature,” said Kathryn Entrekin.

They didn’t just focus on the children though. They had a gift for parents trying to get back on their feet.

“The event works so that it was a one hour workshop that they got to pick which topic that they went to and they got to shop for an hour for their kids, so they were 66 adults, and 150 children were cared for,” said Entrekin.

Both organizations say the spirit of generosity in the community makes it all possible.

“We wouldn’t be able to do anything that we do without the support of the community as we wouldn’t be able to have 55 families on her angel tree if we didn’t believe our community would be generous and give and they do that beat up above and beyond what we expect every year,” said Walker.

The Salvation army angels will be able to pick up their gifts tomorrow and Wednesday.
