COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI)- A fire destroys a Sprint Mart gas station late last night.

It happened on Alabama Street Monday night shortly before 10:30pm.

Authorities believe the fire started somewhere in a back room.

3 units from Columbus Fire & Rescue were called to the scene. Police also directed traffic away from the area.

Employees managed to get out safely, but officials say the building suffered major damage.

“We got a call around 10:30 that they had a fire in here. We’re still not sure what caused the fire. There’s going to be extensive damage. They had to pull the ceiling and all so there’s going to be extensive damage to the building,” says Battalion Chief Bobby Barksdale.

Authorities credit the employees’ quick thinking for shutting off the emergency values. Workers shut it off before exiting the building, which turned off the station’s gas pumps.
