Former Governor Takes Stand in House Speaker Ethics Trial

OPELIKA, Ala. (WCBI) — The ethics trial against Alabama’s Speaker of the House continues. On Friday, a former governor testified.

Ex-Governor Bob Riley told prosecutors Speaker Mike Hubbard emailed him several times looking for a job, but said some of the conversations were just banter.

Riley was questioned over those e-mails from Hubbard, who wanted to work for Riley’s lobbying and consulting firm.

Riley, however, said Hubbard wasn’t being serious every time.

Hubbard is facing 20 years in prison over 23 felony ethics charges of using his political office for personal gain.

If convicted of any charges, Hubbard would be removed from office.
