Former MSU Student Sentenced For Trying To Join ISIS
OXFORD, Miss. (WCBI)- One of the former MSU students accused of trying to join ISIS will spend the next 12 years in prison.
20-year-old Jaelyn Young was sentenced in federal court in Oxford on Thursday.
Emotions were running high in the courtroom. Both of Young’s were fighting back tears when they heard the judge’s ruling that their oldest daughter would spend the next 12 years of her life behind bars.
Young’s parents both took the stand on Thursday. Her mom took the stand and said Young was a honor student all throughout her high school career, and had aspirations of going to medical school. Now, both parents are still left wondering where did their daughter go wrong?
Young’s father also took the stand and said he takes blame for it all.
Her father was in the U.S. Navy and said he couldn’t always be there for Young like he wanted to. He missed out on Young’s high school graduation, and missed out on sending her off to college because he was overseas, and by knowing that he’s taking full responsibility for his daughter’s actions.
Young also had a chance to speak in court as well.
During that time of her life, Young said she was simply burned out from school and everything else. She was lost, depressed an often times contemplated committing suicide. So, instead of turning to her parents for help, Young turned to her fiance Muhammed Daklallah and tried to joining ISIS.
In court, Young was very apologetic and very remorseful for her actions, and said she’s ashamed that she caused some much humiliation to her family.
Young’s fiance Muhammad Daklallah pled guilty to his charges on March 11th and he’ll have his sentencing date later this month on August 24th.
