The Golden Triangle Boys and Girls Club Expansion
WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) – The Golden Triangle Boys and Girls Club is growing.
A generous gift from Mississippi State’s head football coach and his wife, could help establish a unit in West Point and find a permanent home for the Starkville club.
Victoria Bailey has more on the plan to expand with help from the Mullen Family 36 Foundation.
The Starkville Boys and Girls Club is looking for a new home and the city of West Point could soon welcome a club to town.
“I know there’s been a request for, a demand for, and I am from West Point originally, so I know there’s been a need for quite some time. So, yeah we are kind of in a place where we can seriously consider that type of expansion and we are really excited about it,” says Golden Triangle Boys and Girls Club Director, Nadia Colom.
Colom says it took no time to attract others who wanted to help.
“Through the relationship with Mrs. Megan Mullen, Coach Dan Mullen at Mississippi State, his wife, we’ve really kind of got the conversation going. She’s the one who said to me very early on that, ‘West Point is that community that when we first moved into this area, it sold me on.’ She’s always felt a special connection to West Point and so, she was very excited when she heard the business opportunity to grow our program.”
Brittany Turner is the unit director for the Boys and Girls Club of Columbus.
She says the club really compliments the values of any community.
“We try to recruit as many kids as we can to be in a positive, safe environment. We know that there are different things probably offered on the street and peer pressure can snatch them up really quick, so we try and give them a sense of belonging here, and a place where they can feel comfortable.”
Colom says she is thankful to have the support of the community.
“We couldn’t have got to this place without the support from the city already and the support of our school district in West Point and our county, so we appreciate those guys who have already kind of come on board to say yes, there’s a need and we are willing to help.”
The Mullen Family 36 Foundation will present the Golden Triangle Boys and Girls Club with a check at the Prairie Arts Festival to assist with the projects in West Point and Starkville.
