A Hidden And Fascinating Attraction In The Golden Triangle

STARKVILLE , Miss. (WCBI)-The city of Starkville is continuing to grow as new businesses are continuing to come into the area.

While the new businesses and Mississippi State University may be a a few of the main attractions in Starkville, there’s a hidden treasure in the community, the Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum.

“Well the heritage museum was actually established here in 1976, so as you can see it’s been around for a while,” said Keunshea Fleming, a volunteer at the museum. “There’s been numerous renovations made to the interior and exterior Of the heritage museum. They actually added a rooftop garden and a rain garden here to help with the water flow of the museum, and a lot of these renovations were done by Mississippi state university students such as the architecture department and Its just a lot of fascinating elements. I know the direct mission of the museum is just to preserve the heritage of our community so that’s really important for a lot of students my age and just people in general to know about. And it’s just a great thing and I hope more and people come out to the museum, because one thing that we lack is funding. The museum is grant funded so we use those grants for money and also donations my various entities, so just those things are a huge need here.”

Fleming has been volunteering at the museum for a few months now, and tells WCBI about some of the items that are on display inside the museum.

“Ok, well we do change the display here, such as what we have now,” she described.  “We might do Vietnam or it may be based on the civil war so it just depends on which theme we’re looking to do. There’s a section for the kids, they actually have toys and a little dollhouse, some toys that they actually had a long time ago that the kids can actually play with.”

The Oktibbeha County Heritage Museum is open Tuesdays-Thursdays from 1 P.M.-4 P.M. Admission is free, and donations are accepted.
