Hundreds gather on MUW campus to raise awareness about suicide

MISSISSIPPI UNIVERSITY FOR WOMEN, Miss. (WCBI) – Hundreds gathered on the MUW campus to raise awareness about suicide.

The university’s Counseling Center and the Department of Nursing teamed up for the “walk of Hope” today.

Organizers said they want to encourage people to seek help and understand that a lot of people are suffering from Suicidal thoughts and Mental illness.

The goal is to spread hope, along with awareness.

“We want to bring awareness for those who have hopelessness. So we can maybe find them hope in order that they may not make that decision to commit suicide. The second part is for the survivors of the people who have committed suicide so we can let them know that it’s not their fault,” said psychiatric nurse practitioner Angela Orsborn.

“Suicide is actually the second leading cause of death of college students, a large number, and a third of those students are dealing with some type of depression or mental health issues we just don’t talk about it because of the stigma,” said Rob’Dreka Shaw.

Organizers hope to make the walk an annual event
