LOWNDES, Miss. (WCBI) — The Immanuel Christian School is officially on its own.

Members at the Immanuel Church in Lowndes County voted to legally separate from the school it founded 35 years ago. The decision comes just a week after the school’s headmaster Joe York abruptly resigned. Internal issues between the church and school are believed to be at the root of the split.

Rumors of the school closing and parental concerns led members of the local business community to offer to purchase the school. Former Immanuel coach and businessman Billy Thomas helped arrange the deal. Thomas planned to meet with parents today and speak with teachers on Tuesday.

A new 9-member school board will also be announced.

Immanuel Christian School has about 250 students and is for grades Pre-K through 12.
