Inmate serving time out of Lee County dies in Jackson hospital

A female inmate serving 15 years for a conviction out of Lee County died at a Jackson hospital.

40-year-old Mary Jewell died Sunday night at Merit Health Central after becoming sick several months ago. Jewell had been hospitalized several times since December.

The Mississippi Department of Corrections said Jewell was tested for coronavirus, and her results were negative.

An autopsy will be done to determine her official cause of death.

Jewell was sentenced in 2010 to 15 years for attempted armed robbery and two counts of possession of a weapon by a felon in Lee County.
