Ivey begins treatments for cancer

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) – Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey has had an outpatient procedure after being diagnosed with cancer.

Ivey’s office said Friday that the governor’s procedure at the University of Alabama at Birmingham went as planned. The governor is back in Montgomery. Ivey says the treatment will not affect her ability to serve as governor.

Her office says she will resume a regular schedule next week.

The 74-year-old Republican governor announced Thursday that a malignant spot had been found on her lung. The governor says she can receive a series of radiation treatments. Ivey says the cancer was found early and her doctors expect her to make a full recovery.

Her office has not disclosed the specific cancer diagnosis or staging or the exact procedure that she underwent.
