Law Enforcement Respond To Rumors About An Active Shooter At An Area High School

CHOCTAW COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)- The Choctaw County Sheriff’s Department is responding after rumors spread that a student had a gun on the high school campus on Friday.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Chief Deputy Lee Upchurch said their investigation found a new student at the school was being bullied by others who spread the false allegations.

According to the statement, deputies got a call from a parent saying a student brought weapons on campus in a duffle bag.

However, when deputies responded and searched the bag, they only found clothing.

The investigation continued Tuesday when detectives returned to campus to interview the accused student and other students suspected of bullying him by making the false claim.

Upchurch adds the events caused “panic and alarm at the school”, and said some parents even arrived on campus with firearms.

The investigation also found there were adults involved in spreading the rumors on social media.

Deputies said they’re disappointed with the community’s lack of trust in the educational department and law enforcement.
